Sybil Bruncheon's "Letters from Young Fans"...
/Dear Miss Sybil, We are so glad you became our Teecher this Summer at camp. I did not know how to tie my shoes or hold a fork right… and now I do! I really like how to tie knots and now my friends and me play cowboys and Indians and bad men. My friend Gary liked how you taught us to start fires and he’s good at tying knots too. His special history project in school is Joan of Arc, and he’s asked his sister Sally to help him. My history project will be Cochise, and Billy Reilly said he will be my cowboy.
Do you remember Billy? He’s the really cute 3rd grader with all the swimming medals. He would say hello to you right now but he has a gag in his mouth, and I am dancing around him with my rubber tomahawk. Billy likes me to capture him and tie him up. Then he says the Indian chief should kiss the cowboy and ask him questions about horses, and cactuses and love and stuff. It’s fun, and then I play songs for him on the guitar I brought back from the Smokey Mountains Cub Scout Jamboree. Later today Billy and I will teach the other boys in Cub Scouts the Bimini-Twist-Catshank-Clove-Stitch-Half-Hitch with two bow-line flap-overs knot. Whew! I’m out of breath just writing that but I can tie it better than I can spell it. I hope your show is going well, and I hope you teach your audience a nice napkin fold like you taught us when we played cannibals and missionaries. I liked learning napkin folds even though it’s lady stuff. Yours sincerely, Carlton Spinks.
(ps. We sent you the bedsheets that we wrote all the words on for your nice camp song. Remember? The one about the pretty pilgrim lady and the bare naked Indians that jumped into her covered wagon? Do you remember how mad you got about those sheets! You said something about them being special and from Egypt, and we said well they must be really old! So what’s all the fuss??? Ha Ha!! Your friend, Carlton SPHINX!
