One of the great NYC clubs of the 1980s was the eccentric, eclectic, and thoroughly exciting A.R.E.A. down in the Tribeca area (the "triangle-below-Canal Street" as it was later known!). Featuring art and performance "installations" that would change regularly, the club was as often even more entertaining than the guests who frequented it, although the melding of the two often made it hard to decide where the real world ended and A.R.E.A.'s version of it started. The creativity was everywhere, in the music, the fashions, the decorations, the themes for the parties, and in the hearts and minds of the folks lucky enough to have been there for its relatively short run.... Here I am celebrating my birthday and our 1st anniversary on the Gay Cable Network on Thursday, February 13th, 1986. And yes! For the sharp-eyed among you, those are two of the eighteen Francesco Scavullo portraits that he did for me as a present...WOW!!

Daily News on Parade

Imagine my surprise as I ran down to the corner cafe for breakfast on Monday, June 30th, and the nice newstand man started pointing at me and yelling, "Lady! LADY!!! You're da Lady! Look ebberyone! Dee LADY!!!".... immediately people started waving the Daily News under my nose asking for autographs...or money! It was the day after the LGBT Pride Parade (back when it wound all through the city!), and NYC was bracing itself for the week-long festivities around the unveiling of the restored Statue of Liberty. Reagan was in town, and so were the "Tall Ships", and of course, there was Mummie on the cover of the Daily News as a platinum blond!.....ah, good times!...good times....

This was our first poster for the Cowgirl Bingo...(we hadn't even really settled on the "Cow-A-Bingo" name yet!) We DID know that the great photo by Scott Wippermann was a fun choice! It was originally an all-day-shoot of me in a spectacular Marie Antoinette gown, but some of the outtakes also worked in close-up of me as a cigar smoking saloon dandy!! My friend and artist Evelyn Blair took the original layout for this poster and reimagined it into the new sepia and vintage version we're using for the 2013 season.

Crackpot Thursdays

What an ingenious concept : Comedy and Crafting! The folks at Mud, Sweat & Tears studios (where I had done pottery for years!) came up with the idea of having me teach a hand-building ceramics class to folks every Thursday night. Snacks, wine, conversation, and a souvenir!! What could be better?? This poster was done with one of the dozens of fabulous photos that my friend and photographer-phenom Nina Duncan did for us. I have never had so many shots from one session that could be used for funny publicity! And you should have seen what our guests (most of them absolute beginners!) actually made each week!

Fun and Gaymes

Fun And 'Gay'mes! : This was the premiere of the Chauncey Wheel out at the Ice Palace in Cherry Grove, Fire Island, and an experiment to see what kind of crowd we'd get at Happy Hour on a Summer Friday at 5:00. The "locals" piled in and made it their own, and the new arrivals off the ferry would come in with their luggage and kibbitz. Interesting that we didn't put the very graphic (and electrified!) wheel in our ad copy, but the shot we used was of the previous year's end-of-season ball, where I told fortunes and used a sidekick named Koo-Koo La-Roo-Koo! (There he is in the crystal ball saying something rude, or predicting a disaster, or giving out a recipe for Quiche Lorraine!)
