The wedding of Suzanne Switezer; Suzanne’s family had made their fortunes in a huge dairy empire they had built starting in the 1880s, and along with the thousands of cows they herded and milked, they had created a spectacularly successful cheese company, Switezer’s Swiss. Maybe that was why Suzanne’s parents were so disappointed when she decided to marry Billy Jay Jonquer, the infamous “Kansas Koosher”. He had bludgeoned seven elderly ladies over the course of a three year crime-spree. But Suzanne was devoted to him and all his prison mates too. That’s why she planned and catered a “Cheese Festival Wedding”. It was held right there in the top-security cafeteria, just off Death Row… and her bridesmaids were all fully armed with pepper spray… to celebrate Switezer’s newly released Pepper Jack Semi-Soft!

The wedding of Wendy Smoot; Like many weddings, the bride and groom don’t always agree on the theme. Wendy wanted a “Lavender and Lilac Fairyland” and Buck, her husband-to-be wanted a “Wild, Wild West” tribute to cowboys and the American frontier. They compromised… sort of. Wendy picked out everyone’s outfits, and Buck got the bridesmaids to carry red, white, and blue bouquets… and wear Dale Evans’ “Rancherette Stetsons”!… Only Peggy Gardner on the right there ended up with a migraine.

The wedding of Carl Pentaligon; Carl may have been the happiest groom that Steversville had ever seen. And why not? His ceremony was a joyous one at the Blesséd Blood of the Loving Lamb Church where he was married to four of the daughters of the congregation. On that same single day, four separate ladies became… um… “one with him” as their shared husband. Sadly, as at the photo session shortly after the ceremony, he stumbled backwards and impaled himself on a bench leg, as you can see here!... He moved to San Francisco later that week… and opened a bath house for single gentlemen.

The wedding of Patricia Kale; Patty Kale had been the popular captain of the cheerleader squad both in high school and later at the local Community College For Interior Design Sciences. Her brides’s maids included (standing from left) Janice Roland, Brenda Mae Connor, Patty herself, Tiffany Post, and kneeling, Katy Marie Kale, (her niece and flower girl), and Marcia Roth, her Maid-Of-Honor.

It was Patty’s Associate’s Degree in Merchandising that inspired the folks at Woolworth’s where she did their decorating for the Holidays. They were thrilled to store all the Christmas decorations in January and February, and have their Ladies’ Fine Fashion Department remake them all later into the bridal-wear for her Springtime wedding. Patty had gotten the idea from “Gone With The Wind” which was showing at the Munters Movie Revival Palace!... and the velvet and satin gowns were a perfect tribute to Scarlett O’Hara… no one even seemed to notice the holly‘n’spice scented candle spill on Janice Roland’s lap.

From Sybil Bruncheon’s "My Merry Memoirs"... a not-so-merry memory of Springtime and my childhood garden:

White Irises Dana.jpg

I used to have a stand of miniature white irises in my garden that I planted with my grandmother. They were absolutely beautiful; almost too perfect to be real… and they made me feel so wonderful at the very start of Spring when the first green shoots would begin to push up through the cold dirt. Iris shoots have that satiny silvery-green sheen to them, and they’re laid out in flat fan-shaped forms like little sword blades that are so distinctive and sculptural in their own right even before the buds begin to climb out of them and develop into the blooms. Every year, they struck me as incredibly brave, and they warmed my heart more than I can say...

I found out later after I moved away from home, that my brother, (clumsy and not very curious about any of the world around him, let alone all the gardening I had done over the years), went to that particular bed in the very early Spring, and, seeing all the green shoots coming up, thought they were some kind of weed. Can you imagine? What an idiot. A large grouping of identical shoots, very dramatically shaped and obviously the same plant, and he thought it was just a bunch of weeds. He spent hours digging, gouging, and pulling and finally resorted to an axe and a crowbar to pry and chop "all those tangled roots" out of the earth. He just couldn't understand why they were so stubborn.

I returned one Summer for a visit, and I noticed there were no irises left in that part of the garden. I mentioned it to my mother, and she chuckled merrily as she told me.

I remember when I heard what had happened, I went to my room and cried. I imagined all those iris rhizomes wound through each other in that rich black dirt that I had tended year after year after year, so carefully with my grandmother standing by and chatting, guiding me, her eyes twinkling at the promise of beauty. And I grieved at the thought of how those brave little irises had finally been torn to pieces, pried and dragged out of the ground, by a lout, and thrown away in the garbage. I wondered if they wondered where I had gone… the person who had selected them at the nursery, and had planted and then cared for them year after year. Why wasn’t I there to love and protect them?

To this day, it still breaks my heart... breaks my heart…

Weddings (92Q).jpg

The wedding of Pamela Okrun; Pam’s wedding was meant to be a perfect Springtime affair. Everyone in charming flowery pastels (all different too, and in each girl’s favorite color!), and all in that oh-so-flattering “Empire” style that worked on every size and shape. No one could remember a happier bridal party ever! No quarrels or jealousies! And all the girls claiming that they would indeed be able to wear their bridesmaids dresses again “in real life”! How disappointing then to have Pamela contract canine scabbiosis and to have her bridal bonnet turned into an “itch collar”. Thank goodness her vet, Dr. Terry Fillman, was at the ceremony. That’s him in the green.

Weddings (92A).jpg

The wedding of Greta Handbethers; For once, all the bridesmaids seemed to be happy enough with the gowns that were designed for them. Sadly, Greta's childhood friend, Mary Alice Coop had spilled hot chocolate on her own the night before during a scary movie marathon on channel 7. She made the mistake of washing her gown with some of her Dad's dark socks... oh well…

The wedding of Elizabeth Hale Hampton; The theme of the wedding had been decided as "A Midsummer Night's Dream" where all the bridesmaids and attendants would be dressed as fairies, butterflies, and moths. Sadly, Ms. Hampton's Uncle Ned, who had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, crop-dusted the ceremony. The evening news reported seven dead, and thirteen in critical condition, including the bride and groom.

The wedding of Carla-Marie Fiorentino; Carla-Marie’s father Big-Gino was a big-wig in the casino world and had major ties to the underworld. She wanted some big-name entertainment at the reception and dinner, so Gino put the pressure on Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and of course, Frank Sinatra. Yep! That’s Mrs. Sinatra over there on the right... and none too happy.
