Sybil's "31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN!"..... Hands UP!!....

Halloween Rough Red Dry Hands (950C).jpg

Friends, (and I use that term loosely!), do you suffer from rough, red, dry hands? Do daily household chores, washing dishes, cold weather, or running heavy machinery at demolition sites make your hands a fright? Well, the folks at The Heaven-Sent-Hands Institute may be able to help! Working with the scientists and astronauts at NASA in the space program, they have discovered that chapped skin and unhappy housewives are not confined to just our planet Earth! NO! Cosmetologists and Cosmologists are now teaming up together to find out how ladies (even gargantuan ones on other worlds!) are fighting the effects of hot water, harsh detergents, late-night gamma rays, and even asteroid impacts. Would you like to learn their secrets? Now you can! Just pick up your phone and call C-R-A-C-K C-L-A-W-S. That’s right, just dial 272-252-5297. The nice man will tell you how to order! And the convenient 3000 gallon drum of moisturizer will be airlifted to an open field near you! Think of it! In just a week, you’ll be able to look up at the stars, and know that your hands are just as lovely, smooth, and inviting to your husband as some 900’ woman’s in a distant galaxy!! Get out your telescope, and WAVE!!!

A New Sybil's "WHO'Z DAT?"... UNA O'CONNOR (October 23, 1880 - February 4, 1959)

Collage UNA O'CONNOR.jpg

Darlings! Mummy has made a decision! After reading dozens of posts and having hundreds of conversations with well-meaning folks who just don't know about the great CHARACTER actors who gave films the depth and genius that surrounded and supported the so-called "stars", I am going to post a regular, special entry called SYBIL'S "WHO'Z DAT??"....there'll be photos and a mini-bio, and the next time you see one of those familiar, fabulous faces that you just "can't quite place".......well, maybe these posts will help. Some of these actors worked more, had longer and broader careers, and ended up happier, more loved, and even wealthier than the "stars" that the public "worships"......I think there may be a metaphor in that! What do you think??? While you’re reflecting, I’m going to ring my little bell and summon the quintessential maid, lady-in-waiting, landlady, pub waitress, and all round hysteric in the history of film!! Una O’Connor (October 23, 1880 – February 4, 1959). And how appropriate that her birthday falls in October, the month of Halloween and most reminiscent of horror films, because she was featured in some of the most iconic of them.

Born Agnes Teresa McGlade to a Catholic nationalist family in Belfast, Ireland, and educated at St. Vincent's National School, she changed her name when she began her acting career with Dublin's Abbey Theatre. She began her career on the stage prior to World War I, and continued on through the 1920s, but her big breakthrough came when she was cast in Noel Coward’s play CAVALCADE (1933). She was taken to Hollywood to reprise her role in the film, and remained there to appear in some of the most iconic American movies of the 30s, 40’s and 50’s. A favorite of the director James Whale, among O'Connor's most successful and best-remembered roles are her comic performances in Whale's THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933) as the pub landlady and in BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) as the Baron's housekeeper. It’s a tribute to the genius of both O’Connor and Whale that they could combine such broad comic strokes, nearly slapstick, with the horror and tragedy in both films!

She played "straight" roles too, such as the grieving mother of a captured IRA member in THE INFORMER (1935). Her distinctive voice, face, and physicality made her unforgettable to audiences. During her career, she co-starred with the biggest talents of her time; Boris Karloff, Claude Rains, Olivia de Havilland, Errol Flynn, Barbara Stanwyck, and many, many others and was respected and loved by them all. Who can forget her other performances in THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and DAVID COPPERFIELD and over 40 other films? O'Connor also appeared in supporting roles in various theatre productions, and achieved an outstanding success in the role of "Janet McKenzie", the nearly deaf housemaid, in Agatha Christie's WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION at the Henry Miller Theatre on Broadway from 1954 until 1956. As one of the witnesses, in what was essentially a serious drama, O'Connor's character was intended to provide comic relief. She recreated the role the following year in the sensational film directed by Billy Wilder starring Marlene Dietrich, Tyrone Power and Charles Laughton, (coincidentally, she was reunited with Laughton’s wife Elsa Lanchester, her co-star in BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN). She died, having never married or had children, in New York City from heart disease, aged 78.

Sybil's "31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN!"..... Trick or Treat!!!!!

Halloween Gerber Baby (950).jpg

Friends! At Halloween time, we all love seeing children come to our front doors for Trick or Treating, don't we??....and some of their costumes are quite inspired! But we should all remember to be sensitive to the individuality of each and every child we meet. Issues of race, cultural and religious practices, and sexual orientation and gender identity are all things we must be mindful of today!....and I speak from experience!! Oh, how I rue the day that I answered the door bell on a Halloween night long ago, and was met by something that was too horrible...HORRIBLE TO BELIEVE!!! A child--thing, of some sort was standing...just inches away from me....smiling...or reflecting as it stared at me. I couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl...or ...? And just as I was about to shriek in horror, a kindly lady walked up behind it and greeted me with a hearty "Hello!".... she extended her hand and said, "How do you do Miss Bruncheon? This is my daughter, little Annie. You might remember seeing her when she was a baby! She was a model for baby food!!".... Relieved by her friendliness (and indeed even her presence in the company of her bizarre daughter!!), I looked more closely and was struck by what I saw! Little Annie had indeed been a model for baby food! THE baby food of all time. Gerber!!.... she was that plump, priceless smiling baby on a million baby food jars in a multitude of flavors!! The IDEAL baby. The ICON of babies... advertised and published around the world...for decades!! The Gerber baby.... had.... in fact turned into an ACTUAL GERBER!!!!!!

Sybil's "31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN!".... the Brantky Children...

HALLOWEEN The Scary Chair (909).jpg

The Brantky children were always very polite. Well mannered, respectful, with impeccable table manners. Philbert, Carlos, and little Enoch impressed every adult who ever met them. Philbert would extend his hand to shake those of the grown-ups that his parents brought home for cocktail parties. And although his younger brother Carlos was still dressed in the traditional "girl's garments" (because he was only 5 and that was the tradition among sophisticated families!), he too was considered a "little gentlemen" and a source of pride to his parents. Being merely an infant, Enoch was not expected to behave in any other way than as an infant, but his gentle temperament, jolly demeanor, and good looks made him a favorite among his mother's visiting lady friends! This good fortune made it all the more distressing when the children began to tell first their nanny, and then the rest of the servants and finally their parents about the "bad furniture". At first it seemed like the whims and wild fancies of imaginative children.... silly stories, fibs, harmless fictions meant to get the attention of older people. But the stories continued and became more elaborate...vivid... and disturbing! ....even lurid. The parlor piano would tinkle its keys as they passed... A side table would perhaps take a sip of a beverage sitting on it. A chair might suddenly nudge one of the children...actually touching... in a bad way. (Philbert carefully explained the difference between "good touches" and "bad touches" to Carlos, who batted his eyelashes, and to little Enoch who gurgled happily!!) Sometimes the sofa would move while they sat in it...and whisper bad things while one of its arms casually brushed against them... maybe to hug them, but not nicely. The Persian rug in the hall deliberately tripped them...and once tried to roll up tightly with little Enoch as he crawled too near. Their parents never actually saw any of these things... but the children were adamant. Again and again the adults ignored …or refuted their stories. It wasn't until Philbert brought the small hatchet from the barn into the front hall and walked up to the huge hat stand.......to teach it a lesson...

Sybil’s “31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN”…. Another foray into Science Fiction!

HALLOWEEN Target Earth Film (798).jpg

Another chance to rehabilitate my blacklisted career came when I was asked to be in TARGET EARTH (1954). It always fascinated me that the robot in this film was constructed from a giant Kleenex box and two Electrolux vacuum cleaner hoses.... If nothing else, after invasion from outer space, one’s house would be thoroughly clean and germ free....  But poor Richard Denning!!! Forced to spend the 1950s fighting off Kleenex-Box robots, giant black scorpions, three-eyed atomic monsters, and fish-man creatures in black lagoons, ....and when he finally gets a chance with Deborah Kerr in AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957), she throws him over for Cary Grant! Talk about jilted!!!!

Sybil Bruncheon’s “31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN!”…. My Science Fiction Career!

HALLOWEEN Robot Monster Film (797).jpg

I was offered the female lead in the film THEY CALL ME MRS. GORILLA-ROBOT-THING FROM URANUS (1956) as a way to "rehabilitate" my career after the Hollywood Blacklisting scandals....but I just couldn't! I said it would be better to be thought of as a left-wing sympathizer and work as a late-night cashier at the Piggly Wiggly than to be carried screaming into a pie-tin flying saucer by a giant dust-bunny! ...on the other hand, I DID miss the opportunity to do scenes in FRONT of the camera (and in my dressing room!) with a shirtless George Nader. Poor George, he was gratuitously undressed through much of the ten day filming schedule... most of it in a roadside motel...or in the alley in back! Yes, I can read your minds.... "classy"....

Sybil Bruncheon's 31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN: A Dog's Life!…

Halloween Westminster Dog Show (714E).jpg

So many of us are animal lovers, not just sharing our homes with four-legged friends, but also enjoying showing off our companions and entering them in pet shows; both local, small ones and in national and international competitions! Did you know that in 1926, Chief Baaquli NacNac from Rhodesia entered his Swahili Hound, "Pom-Pmumbo" in the Westminster Dog Show and won the overall Best-In-Show!?!...

But imagine the gathered celebrities', reporters', and officials' horror when Chief NacNac then offered to serve Pom-Pmumbo at the victory banquet afterwards....... as hors d'oeuvres!! The judges finally convinced the chief that it was the WRONG thing to do.... "Pom-Pmumbo" lived to be 34 years old and died in his sleep after a long and joyous life on a British estate belonging to the Earl of Croquitte.

(Postscript: Interestingly, eight years later, Chief Baaquli NacNac, after a good will tour of Borneo, was eaten by cannibals at a Birthday banquet for the chief of the Xhthu-lu-ulus. He had been invited as a foreign guest-of-honor, not realizing that meant that he would actually be the salad course.)
