Sybil Bruncheon's "Aren't People Fascinating?... Muriel Desatnick..."

Derelict House Muriel.jpg

Muriel had always taken care of her entire family even as a child. At six, her domineering mother taught her how to do the laundry, wash the dishes, polish the silver, and to scrub the floors ("Don't forget the baseboards, Muriel!… THE DAMN BASEBOARDS!!")...

When her friends were out playing after school, Muriel was just starting some housekeeping project or another, then cooking and serving dinner, and then to bed to finish her homework before falling asleep in her pillows and school books. Week after week, semester after semester, year after year, the grades slipped through her rough, red, dish-water hands and wrinkled fingers...

Time passed, and first her grandparents, and then each of her parents passed away as well... until finally, she was alone. Blessédly alone.

At 58 years of age, she had spent nearly her entire life taking care of her family's needs like a maid, a common maid. Was it any surprise, once the last funeral had been arranged and attended, that Muriel's first solitary night in the house was a restful one? The guests for the wake had left, the dishes were in the sink, the leftovers were on the counters, glasses and cups on the side tables... Muriel looked around and breathed a sigh of relief. A sigh of relief that had decades of baggage and heft behind it, and deep, deep subtext running through it. Her sigh contained a level of release and gratitude that few people would ever experience... or even imagine. And then, slowly and almost imperceptibly, these years too began to slide by... but this time, with a simple quiet joy, too quiet and simple for other folks to notice or understand, but rich and lovely enough for Muriel. Colored, and vivid, and flavorful for Muriel. Each moment a celebration of peace and fulfillment and... well... life!

And NO, to answer your question, she never, ever cleaned a single thing again in her long, long, long life. Not a single thing.

Sybil Bruncheon’s “My Merry Memoirs”… LGBTQ Pride Parades of the Past - 1996.

The Sybil Bruncheon Repertory Company (including Bob Gutowski & Jay Boehm, Jeffrey Wallach, and Marty Santoro seen here, along with Jay Rogers, Thomas Stoehr, Douglas Huston, and James Takos) did a tribute to the 200th anniversary of the French revolution and the beheading of Marie Antoinette called "Those Naughty, Naughty Queens!". We built a working tumbril, and the entire company dressed as Revolutionaries and Sans Culottes selling toy-guillotines and headless gingerbread men to the crowds! And guess who got to be the Queen being dragged to the scaffold! Type-casting, I guess you could say!... and here I tried so hard and so often to treat my staff and supporting cast with so much kindness, generosity, and understanding… oh well. (Who would have thought that 25 years later with Washington DC in so much turmoil, our little caprice would be so very pertinent!) Ah, good times!... good times!

From Sybil Bruncheon's "Hysterical Histories...The Doomed Celeste"...

Halloween Haunted Celeste Contortionist Collage (704F).jpg

One of many owners who owned and now haunt this unfortunate little celeste (often mistaken for a piano!): Born Placenta O'Grady she later took on the stage name of LICKETY-SPLITZ as a drag-performer/contortionist. She could play Mozart forwards and backwards… with her feet! BEHIND HER EARS! She performed mostly in mining towns along the West Virginia/Pennsylvania border with a very friendly rhesus monkey which accompanied her on the ukulele. On various occasions the monkey (named Mr. Wonky) would be dressed as Joan of Arc, Florence Nightingale, or Eleanor Roosevelt, depending on political proclivities of the local audiences. Simultaneously, O’Grady could juggle various oblong vegetables shaped like foreign countries...or Presidents of the United States. Coincidentally, she had fairly lovely skin. She lost her life when a jealous lover folded her into a three penny envelope and mailed her to Niagara Falls. Her restless ghost insists on playing the Queen of the Night's aria from THE MAGIC FLUTE.. "Der Hölle Rache!!!!!"...

Sybil Bruncheon's "Hysterical Histories... Follow The Bouncing Ball"...

Ah yes... the famous though tragic Prince Юсипов вонючие шарики (Yusipov Smellibalz). Distantly related to the Czar, he gambled away his own small fortune on horse and dog racing, roulette, and billiards. He was granted a certain amount of leeway by loansharks and disreputable carnival persons because of his Romanov connection, but finally, the more unsavory of them began to use more dangerous threats trying to collect their debts from him. Once his own Fabergé eggs had been pawned along with his collection of luxury automobiles, stable of thoroughbreds, and the family silver, he was forced to join the sad Vaudeville circuit that traveled the entire length of Russia, from the Baltic Sea all the way to Siberia. His extraordinary talent at billiards, especially "novelty shots" was the draw... and of course his young children's acrobatic abilities on the balance beam, even and uneven bars, and the tumbling mats! The family was listed as YUSSY & HIS SMELLIBALLS! (postcript: The Prince and his family escaped the Revolution and emerged in New York City in 1920 as a band of performers "Saluted And Admired By The Crowned Heads Of Europe!)...
