Sybil Bruncheon's "MY MERRY MEMOIRS"... or maybe Dagmar's...

With many thanks to my friend Jonathan Boorstein for finding this old photo: That's my identical twin, Dagmar, who entered a skiing competition in Vroče Žemljice, the famous and glamorous resort in Slovenia. Drugged and drunk as usual, she got on the wrong train and overnighted South into Italy to Venice!! The one thing I can say about my sister is that she never sulks... she's unsinkable much like Mummie... we got that quality from our Mother, deranged as she was.. Anyway, Dagmar challenged all the local gondoliers to a race and managed to... um... "water-ski" her way around the canals and win an impromptu marathon against twelve of the burliest gondola-guys. Peggy Guggenheim's mansion happened to be the finish line, and she invited everyone in for an extended weekend of "dining and debauchery" as she called it... I DO remember Dagmar's outfit in this photo along with various striped shirts, trousers, and... ahem... "underthings" floating in the canal in front of Peggy's the next morning. A side note; Peggy didn't have a trophy she could give Dagmar so she gave her a small Picasso of one of his wives looking like a guitar with both eyes on one side of her face and screaming about something. It was gorgeous!... Can you blame me for stealing it from Dagmar's guest bathroom a week later?? Can you???

Sybil Bruncheon's "A Few of My Favorite Things”... The World of Mr. Finch!...

Allow me to introduce you to one of the most extraordinary people I've ever encountered here on the internet. He makes, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful art objects I've ever seen from an imagination that belongs in the company of Lewis Carroll, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, and the great illustrators of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The precision and care he takes on his sculptures of magical creatures is mind-boggling.

"My name is Finch – it’s actually my surname… everyone calls me it and I like it.

I’ve called my business Mister Finch so its clear from the start that I’m a man and one that sews.

We are a bit thin on the ground but we are out there!

I live in Leeds in Yorkshire not too far from the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in the UK.

I have no formal training in anything to do with textiles or sewing and apart from a short art course I did many years ago I’ve learnt all I know myself.

I’ve tried many areas creatively over the years and now I find myself sewing which I adore.

When I’m not making things which isn’t that often I love to read and watch old movies.

Flowers, insects and birds really fascinate me with their amazing life cycles and extraordinary nests and behaviour.

British folklore is also so beautifully rich in fabulous stories and warnings and never ceases to be at the heart of what I make.

Shape shifting witches, moon gazing hares and a smartly dressed devil ready to invite you to stray from the path.

Humanizing animals with shoes and clothes is something I’ve always done and I imagine them to come alive at night. Getting dressed and helping an elderly shoemaker or the tired housewife.

Making things has always been incredibly important to me and is often an amazing release to get it out of my system.

It’s a joy to hunt for things for my work…the lost, found and forgotten all have places in what I make.

Most of my pieces use recycled materials, not only as an ethical statement, but I believe they add more authenticity and charm.

A story sewn in, woven in.

Velvet curtains from an old hotel, a threadbare wedding dress and a vintage apron become birds and beasts, looking for new owners and adventures to have.

Storytelling creatures for people who are also a little lost, found and forgotten…"

Sybil's "Big Stars On The Little Screen": Bob Ross...

Bob Ross had a speaking voice as effective as Thorazine...and his Do-It-At-Home painting programs were prescribed nationwide by the National Institute of the Emotionally Inconvenienced... within 68 seconds of the beginning of any one of his shows, entire asylums of shrieking lunatics, serial arsonists, and ferocious sex offenders would be curled up dozing comfortably and sucking their own thumbs. Finally, his shows were simply looped on closed circuit televisions, saving millions on mood altering and anti-psychotic medications. Sadly, it was discovered that over-exposure to his "happy little trees", "giggling little waterfalls", and "frisky little squirrels" could result in paralysis and even death. A ward nurse in Paramus left her patients alone and unattended with a Bob Ross marathon on PBS for a full eight hour shift, and returned to a catastrophic loss of life...and/or eyesight. She was tried and convicted of willful negligence, medical malpractice, and assault with a cheerful little brook… with intent to kill.
